Frequently Asked QuestionsHow do I get started?A. You don't need to pre-register. Choose the Bikram style class for your entry to yoga and come a few minutes early. Don't be afraid, as you will not be the only new one. Be prepared to work hard and sweat. Drink lots of water the day of class, avoid eating three hours prior, and wear aerobic/workout attire. No shoes. What if I'm not flexible?A. This is the most common misconception that prevents people from coming to a yoga class. Yoga is not about how flexible you are! It is about stretching your body and spine on a regular basis, which will cause your body to function at its optimal level. Aches and pain, stiffness and puffiness will be drastically reduced by a regular practice. Flexibility will automatically become part of your physical well-being! Why does the room have to be hot?A. The room is intentionally hot! The heat does many things. It protects the muscles and allows for deeper stretching sooner in the practice- maximizing the practice time. It opens the pores (the body's largest organ of elimination) and detoxifies the body. It thins the blood and increases blood flow. It increases the heart rate for a cardiovascular workout. It softens the collagen around the joints. It reduces fatty tissue. How does yoga work?A. Similar to the effect of a tourniquet: the muscles are stretching and contracting all at the same time (push/pull effect similar to a rubber band), temporarily cutting off blood supply to arteries and veins. When the stretch is released, blood is allowed to again rush through those veins and arteries, flushing/clearing them out with fresh blood and oxygen. Pressure is applied to the heart by its relative position in the body also creating a similar cleansing effect. BENEFITS OF HOT YOGA
